Yummy plants to Garden

So you’ve got your tools and equipment and are ready to garden. But wait. What are you supposed to grow? Tomatoes or potatoes? Is it the right season for some carrots? Soooooooo many things to consider. So I’m going to give you a guide on what to grow.

The vegetables suggested below are common plants that are relatively easy to grow. You can also contact your state’s Cooperative Extension Serviceto find out what plants grow best in your area. Think about what you like to eat as well as what’s difficult to find in a grocery store or farmers market.

Top Ten Vegetables

  1. Tomatoes- Tomatoes are not hard to grow; they’re incredibly productive, versatile in the kitchen, and so delicious.

  2. Zucchini squash- Squash, especially zucchini, are very good producers and easy to grow. Each plant will produce several squash a day during peak season. Make sure you harvest summer squash when tender and still immature.

  3. Peppers- Peppers resist most garden pests. They offer something for everyone: spicy, sweet, or hot.

  4. Cabbage- Cabbage can be challenging to grow for the beginner gardener. They only grow in cool temperatures and it can attract some garden pests. But this plant is antioxidant and nutrient-rich, perfect for any meal.

  5. Bush beans- Bush beans tend to grow more thick and do not require support. They require less maintenance and are easier to grow, but pole beans, if you choose to grow this type, typically yield more beans and are mostly disease-resistant.

  6. Lettuce- Lettuce contains a ton of vitamin A. Plant it in the spring, starting two weeks before frost. In fall, start sowing again eight weeks before the fall frost.

  7. Beets- Beets grow easily and you won’t have to wait long until harvesting. And you can eat their green tops, too, so they’re a dual-purpose crop.

  8. Carrots- Carrots are easy to grow as long as they are planted in loose, sandy soil during the cooler periods of the growing season—spring and fall (carrots can tolerate frost) Carrots may take anywhere from 2 to 4 months to mature.

  9. Chard- Chard is a member of the beet family that does well in both cool and warm temperatures.

  10. Radishes- Radishes are very easy to grow vegetables that can be planted multiple times in a growing season. Plus, radishes can be harvested as soon as three weeks after planting.

There are lots of things you can grow but these 10 veggies are a good starting point. They are healthy, easy to grow, and fun to harvest.

So grab your tools and get ready to grow some fresh veggies!
